Workshop:  Greening the End of Life:  Home Funerals and Green Burials

Prior to the Civil War, there were no funeral homes. Families laid out their dead in the parlor, and buried them nearby. Loved ones gently cared for the body: bathing, dressing, and anointing it, while sharing goodbyes and blessings. Caring for loved one as they were dying, and just after they died, allowed families and friends to create profoundly meaningful space and deeply sacred rituals.

Today, more and more people are choosing to return to simpler, more personalized, more environmentally sustainable death practices, which can include home funerals and green burials. It is a little known fact that in most states, including Wisconsin, it is legal to act as the funeral director for a close family member, and to care for and transport the body.  During this interactive workshop we will discuss family-directed funerals, including caring for the body after death, and creating powerful rites of passage at home. We will also talk about the environmental impact of embalming, traditional burial, and cremation – and consider more sustainable methods for disposal of the body. The goal is for participants to be better prepared to make the most meaningful after-death choices for themselves and for close family members.
